Review: “Ajo Restaurant – a clever Combination of Italian / Sardinian and OZ Pub Food”
Ajo’s seasonal Menu is presented very neat and clean including an array of Primi (Cold and warm Appetizers) such as “Fregola (type of Sardinian Pasta) risotto with Queensland spanner crab, almonds and marjoram” which was very tasty and had a great texture (crunch from the almond slivers), prepared perfectly. Unfortunately the “Freshly marinated Sardine fillets, fennel, parsley, capers and charred focaccia” lacked in taste and aroma – there was no acidity (lemon or vinegar) which made the dish blan! Secondi (Main courses) included dishes such as “Seared mutton back strap, pea puree, golden carrots (the were black – burnt, olive caramel” which was served cold instead of hot! The “Partially deboned smoked Spatchcock, mustard and breadcrumbs, served in the pan” was good and is reflecting the locality, theme and approach by the Chef for his Food style. Vegetarian (Secondi) Main course like “Pumpkin Culurgiones (Sardinian ravioli), confit leek, hazelnuts, burnt butter and sage” is a classic flavour combination. The Dessert (Dolci) Menu is offering some classics with a modern twist like “Affogato with Frangelico”, homemade Tiramisu with chocolate shavings” and “Millefoglie of Amedei chocolate, raspberry and rosemary”. A good choice of cheeses (including Bella Vitano Espresso – Semi Hard, Cow’s milk from Wisconsin, USA and Gorgonzola Dolce – Blue, Cow’s milk from Lombardy, Italy) are on offer with a good range of matching Dessert Wines. Overall an average to a good meal! Wine Menu is impressive! Service and atmosphere is excellent.
